Business Casual

My son attends a rather affluent Catholic school and as is typical with a parochial facility, uniforms are required. Khakis for the guys and the girls have an option of khaki pants or skirts. Blue or green polo shirts with the school logo on them. I take him to school two mornings a week and I enjoy seeing the early morning atmosphere and watching these kids. It's an energized way to start the day, you can almost feel the charged buzz of adolesence. I drive by another high school on my way to work and the difference in dress code is astounding. I'm not sure where I fall on this issue. I can see both sides, I'm an advocate of individual choice but there is merit to a uniform dress code also. I personally would have chosen the little plaid skirts and white blouses but there may be a prurient motive in there somewhere on my part.

The school sends out a weekly parent email and last friday's edition announced that today was "Senior Business Casual Day" . There was a disclaimer at the end calling for "appropriate" attire and a reminder that there were to be no bare bellies and that skirts had to be of an acceptable length.

So this morning we drive onto campus and as we get to the place I drop him off the first two students I see are girls, both in white, one in a skirt swirling around her legs a few inches above her knees, an inch or two of bare belly above, pink toenails in strappy sandals, and the other in skin tight low rise white pants, again, belly bared and sandals.

There were apparently to be a couple of local companies on hand today to talk to the seniors about job interview technique. While realizing how wrong it would have been for me to offer either of these girls an entry level position at my company I made a mental note that the boy most likely won't get much of his homework done at school today but should be in a good if somewhat frustrated frame of mind tonight. It also occurred to me that the uniform dress code is probably worth a good half point on his GPA.

Hey, I'm sure they were 18, don't look at me like that.
